Improving Students' Writing Skills

by Sandra M. Franco
University High School
Tucson, Arizona

Goal
Students will improve their writing skills by concentrating on and classifying their grammatical and orthographical errors in their compositions, essays, and writing assignments using a worksheet titled "Clasificación de errores en un ensayo."

Rationale
It seems a general rule that students repeat their mistakes in writing. They also don't seem to pay enough attention to their grammatical and orthographical errors and the teacher's corrections. For many years, I have corrected students' errors, all the while wondering if students looked at all the corrections. In the past, I required students to rewrite their essay with the corrections I provided.

After continuing to see the same errors on students' essays with this method, I put together the following worksheet. To complete the worksheet correctly, students must be able to recognize the type of each error in their essay and write it in the correct section. By writing the incorrect form first and then the correct form, with the number of the reason in parentheses, students focus on their previous mistakes and redirect their learning.

Directions
1. After the teacher has corrected the student's essay, this worksheet is given to the student along with the corrected essay.
2. The teacher can provide a grade for the essay, with additional possible points for the worksheet.
3. The teacher explains or reviews the directions for the worksheet.
